The Rise of Technology and Ethics
The rise of digital technology has been nothing short of impressive. Technology has enhanced efficiency, brought down costs, and accelerated research and development in various sectors, including healthcare, banking, retail, and manufacturing. The impact of technology on all aspects of human life has been through leaps and bounds, making critical decisions that could determine life or death. Without governmental supervision to determine potential threats, more harm than good could ensue.
In the words of Professor Michael Sandel, AI has the potential to cause three main issues for society: invasion of privacy, racial discrimination, and bias in thinking. Because of these issues, Sandel thinks that the community must be cautious as to how it should handle AI.
The debate over ethics in the age of technology is not new. There are many opinions on the ethical dilemmas that arise from use of AI, robotics, and other technologies.
Some believe that we should focus on making these technologies safe and secure. Others believe that it is unethical to give robots life-changing decisions, like who lives or dies. Some argue that we should not worry about ethics because technology will take care of itself in time. Technology has been a major part of our lives, and will continue to be so in the future. We must have a discussion about the ethics and moralities that come with it, especially when technology seems to be advancing at an exponential rate. There are many opinions on what should happen next, but there is one thing that we can all agree on: We need to start having this conversation now.
Technology is a double-edged sword. It can be used for good or for evil. In Africa, we have a saying: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." This means that even the best intentions can lead to bad results if we are not careful.
When it comes to technology, we need to be mindful of the ethical implications of our choices. We need to ask ourselves how our use of technology will impact others, both now and in the future.
For example, we need to consider the impact of technology on our environment. How will the mining of rare earth minerals for our smartphones and laptops impact nature?
We also need to consider the impact of technology on our social fabric. How will the use of social media and online platforms impact our relationships with each other? How will the spread of fake news and misinformation erode trust in our institutions?
The answers to these questions are not easy. But it is important that we start asking them now. Because if we don't, we may find ourselves on a path to a future that we do not want and cannot control.
The relationship between humanity and technology is one of many ethical issues present in our society today. These ethical issues manifest in the form of cyberbullying, privacy concerns, and so many more. We must be mindful of how we can use these technologies for good- whether for higher education or to address the various social issues that exist today. Honesty is generally a good rule of thumb when avoiding these ethical dilemmas because it conscientizes us when we are at risk for them in the first place.
